Enthusiasm - An Effective Tool for Community Building

Enthusiasm - An Effective Tool for Community Building

In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Nothing great is ever achieved without enthusiasm."

During this last summer break, my godson was around to spend the summer holiday which lasted for a month. To keep him busy, I enrolled him in a summer coaching academy. The first week was so tough as he was finding it difficult to adapt to the school and the new people around, it must have been tough on him as that was the first time he will be away from his home for a long time. By the weekend of the first week, my neighbour's grandchildren (two girls and a boy) who are in the same age range as my godson arrived, I introduced them to each other and they soon became inseparable. During the time they spent together over the weekend, they shared and learnt a lot from their favourite TV shows, their friends in their respective schools, their end-of-session party, and other things.

The following Monday morning, I was surprised when my godson woke me up as early as 6 am thereabout to prepare him for his coaching. This was someone who spent last week crying at the sound of school. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he was suddenly interested in going to school, he said the neighbour’s grandchildren will be following him to school and he was so enthusiastic about going to school that morning. The next 3 weeks of attending the summer coaching were fun and productive because they all share an enthusiasm for learning.

Enthusiasm is like a magnet that unites people. It is contagious and people enjoy being around it. When you are enthusiastic about a course, you naturally exude a magnetic force that incites excitement and interest in other people.

How then can you build a community through enthusiasm?

  1. Be an enthusiastic leader: Many of us never comprehend the enormous power of enthusiasm. It exudes confidence, transmits joy, boosts morale, and inspires people around us. You can never lift anyone to an emotional state higher than your own. Creating enthusiasm inside yourself is a critical first step. Those who come into contact with you will always notice your upbeat attitude about life.

  2. Create an enthusiastic Project: Community members always like to participate in projects that they can resonate with, they want projects they can be proud of and identify with. An enthusiastic project can transform an uninspired individual into a productive person, a pessimist into an optimist, and a loafer into a go-getter.

  3. Encourage and help your community members to be enthusiastic: When transmitted through mood, actions, and performance, enthusiasm is a strong tool that can impact the lives of others. You harness the force of communal enthusiasm simply by creating and participating in activities that are exciting. Each of us has enthusiasm ready to be turned on and exploited. When you focus your energy on a pre-determined, meaningful goal, your passion begins to shine through as you work toward its completion.

Enthusiasm is the outward manifestation of a deep emotion that motivates and inspires you to act. Finally, it encourages personal initiative in both thought and action.

Enthusiasm is a friend-maker, a smile-maker, and a confidence-maker. "I've got what it takes," it declares to the world. It tells everyone that our job is great, our employment suits us well, and the items you have are the best.
